Vietnam is amazing and still genuine it is not fixed up for visitors. Nowhere is this much more obvious than in the Mekong Delta, with its floating markets, where locals live, function and make money from the numerous tributaries of the river. As the food basket of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta covers a tremendous area winding its way over 3000 mi. from Tibet through Cambodia to Vietnam’s Peninsula, where it splashes into the South China Sea. A tiny electric motor launch took us along a serene tributary away from the madding crowd of the primary river where each bend brought a new shock and beautiful scenery before we reached the house of a local farmer for lunch.
We arrived in vibrant Can Tho, the delta’s biggest city, in the late afternoon and invested the time discovering this active and vibrant port city. We climbed the next early morning at 4 am in raw expectancy. The day on the river begins at the daybreak and drifting markets are held every morning from regarding 5 am till noon. We entered a tiny motor boat and made our means up the river to our first stop – the Phung Hiep market, the largest of the drifting markets, situated at the crossroads of 7 major canals. The photo that welcomed us was like laundry socializing to dry. A labyrinth of thousands of sampans spread out on the hectic river, lifting examples of their wares on looming bamboo poles, to be seen from a distance. Coconuts, melons, mangoes, a load of turtles, serpents, vegetables, fish, urns and vases and so a lot more all piled high on the vessels.
